Mission: Grow, Cook, Eat!
Since you and your family have been enjoying your missions with Wilbur, he and I thought that it would be nice to keep the missions coming.
In spring and summer, we can have some of the best food missions ever! Not only can we make some tasty food, but we can spend time together outdoors planting and growing our own food like people around the world!
In many Latin American countries like Cuba, Mexico and United States commonwealth of Puerto Rico, many people enjoy their food spicy! They also enjoy salsa dancing! How about planting a salsa garden? Many salsas are made from tomatoes, peppers and onions. Have you ever heard of a “ghost pepper”? If you think ghosts are scary, you should try a ghost pepper! The ghost pepper, (the bhut jolokia pepper ) is 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce, and 100 times hotter than a jalapeno! So you may or may not want to plant ghost peppers, but a jalapeno plant might be a good choice! If you plant tomato, onion, and pepper plants now, by the end of summer, you can make your own salsa! And while you are at it, why not try learning salsa dancing!
Say Hello to Herb!
Another favorite food of Wilbur’s is Italian food! Italian food has some great herbs (plants not people) in it like oregano and basil. Planting a kitchen herb garden is so much fun. You can grow cilantro and chives to add to your salsa! Parsley and thyme are yummy in almost everything. All you need is a large pot, good soil, plant food and a few herb plants. Plants like chives, parsley and mint don’t need as much sunlight as the other herbs that need approximately 4 hours of sunlight a day, so make sure you have a nice sunny spot picked out. There is a great video from the gardening guru Martha Stewart if you want more tips! In a few weeks, you can pinch off some basil leaves and make some of Wilbur’s favorite, yummy spaghetti sauce with meatballs!
Let’s have S’More Fun
Once you are done with all that fun gardening and delicious pasta, it’s time to relax around a campfire and make Wilbur and I’s favorite food-S’MORES! We think they are out of this world! As you know, they are traditionally made with Hershey bars, marshmallows, and graham crackers, but don’t be afraid to try some other flavor combinations, like using Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups instead of the Hershey bar, or how about throwing in some banana slices with it? You might try using chocolate chip cookies or thin rice crispy treats in lieu of graham crackers! If you are really adventurous, why not sprinkle on some dried crickets or grasshoppers! Many people in different countries , like Brazil, Ghana, China and Thailand eat insects. Eating bugs have even saved some people’s lives! They have grown in popularity in the United States too, and you can order them already dried and ready for consumption from marketplaces like Etsy.
We hope you enjoy these additional cooking missions! Thank you for joining us and check back soon for additional missions on the website at www.myalienbooks.com.
